Edirol R-09 24-Bit WAVE/MP3 Recorder
Summary
Product Title: Edirol R-09 24-Bit WAVE/MP3 Recorder
Manufacturer: Edirol
Power Score: 3.8 | 11 Reviews
Strengths: Small package, great user interface, built in mics, replaceable batteries, SD card
Weakness: Useless to have 24 bit recording if the bottom 12 are filled with noise.
I bought the R09 to record voice interviews for my podcast. The product is fantastic if it were not for the unacceptable level of hiss noise in the recordings. The level is particularly high with the built-in mics and still annoying using a high quality mic (SM58 or C1000S). Given the low level of complaint about this (searching for hiss + R09 on google), I presume most units are not as bad as...
Strengths: Small, lightweight, high-quality recording, easy control of input levels, easy transfer to computer
Weakness: Battery cover, price of accessories
I am an ethnomusicologist, and I do a lot of fieldwork in adverse conditions (rainforest, primarily). For the past five years, I've been using a Sharp minidisc recorder for all of my field recording. While I was generally happy with MD--relatively inexpensive media, decent recording quality--there are some difficulties. I was especially frustrated by the fear that if my battery ran out in...
Strengths: 24 bits in your pocket!
Weakness: Few adjustable settings Only 1 track recording
This unit has amazing audio quality for its size. It's much smaller than I imagined it would be - I was shocked when I pulled it out of the box. Just make sure to get a high speed 2GB secure digital card to go with it and you'll be all set. I only wish I could record from two sources simultaneously.
Strengths: Size, capacitates 4 GB SD card, .WAV and MP3 formats at various qualities
Weakness: Limited inputs, feels delicate. A little pricey, but worth it.
I am so impressed with this little recorder. As soon as I got it, I sat down and recorded a half-dozen songs, testing the various format qualities. It reproduces like the live performance. I noticed a distinct jump in quality between the MP3 format options and the WAV format; the latter being superior, but the former taking less space for rougher recording needs. It interfaced seamlessly with my...
Strengths: Exceptionally great quality recording for a samll and portable device
Weakness: Single track; no hard drive--can only store in SD.
I just received this item today but could not wait to try it out. I was amazed at how small and light weight it is. At first I had doubt how good the recording quality would be. I recorded piano playing and singing. It's amazing! It's the best recording device I have ever owned and it's also the smallest. I only wish the device would have a hard drive itself instead of relying completely on SD...
Strengths: easy to operate, very good sound, directions are easy to understand.
Weakness: plastic case of the machine is a little bit flimsy-don't drop the recorder,it does not look very strong.you'll have to buy a larger memory card to do any serious recording.
this recording device is what musicians like myself have been waiting for.the recording goes directly onto a memory card, and it is a simple matter to transfer its contents onto a computer in order to burn a cd.the sound quality is really good-even for recording a classical music concert.if one used an external microphone, the sound gets even better. I highly recommend this little recorder for its...
Strengths: Great Sound, very good range. Captures the true sounds and vocals are very realistic.
Weakness: Short Battery Life.
I believe this product is one of the better recorders out there. It has a great range of sound recording and is true to the nature to which it is recorded. It doesn't have much white noise, in other words. The stereo sound is excellent. Although the battery life is limited I believe this is a superior product.
Strengths: Portability, Price, Secure Flash Media
Weakness: Dim Display Outdoors, Poor Internal Mics, Flimsy Mini-Plug Connect
Wishing to add audio to my photographic soundshows, I purchased this unit for approximately $300 dollars online. The beauty of this small MP3/WAV file recorder is its hand-held size and digital audio capture on widely-available SD format cards. With the 2GB SD card I bought loaded, I can record extremely high quality audio interviews, music, ambient noise or just about anything. It is plastic,...

A terrific choice
Strengths: Small size, user friendly, high quality recordings, AA batteries, SD card
Weakness: Battery door, display size, difficult to read markings on sides
This recorder is an amazing piece of technology wrapped in as small and discreet a package as you can get. There is a bit of a learning curve when recording voice vs. musical performance, but it is not that difficult to adjust the inputs to get a good clear result. I suspect an external microphone would reduce some of the ambient noise and will test that out soon. As others have mentioned, the...
