Summary
Product Title: Staples MailMate Junk Mail Shredder
Manufacturer: Staples
Power Score: 1.5 | 20 Reviews
Strengths: it's a good, solid machine that shreds well, but...
Weakness: it only lasted a month of light use before failing to come on and becoming inoperable. Looks like they are closing these out for a reason.
I'm returning mine. I'll shop around for something similar but better. I'm afraid that buying another would result in the same problem. Staples must have had so many returns they are stopping selling them.
Strengths: compact and will shred credit cards
Weakness: will take very few pieces of paper before it gets stuck
Nobody should buy this shredder - as in the other reviews it just up and quit. Only a few pieces of paper were inserted, far less than the number suggested in its promotion. It was hardly used and is really not worth even trying.
Strengths: Shreds whole junk mail packs in one pass.
Weakness: Stops working promptly.
I agree, good idea, but a hunk of junk. THIS LASTED FOUR WHOLE MONTHS, BEFORE IT JUST STOPPED one day. Looking at the other reviews I guess I was lucky. AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
Strengths: Heavy duty shredder. Shreds all items as listed. Good size
Weakness: Broke down within 5 mins of use within 1 year with minimal usage
I bought this almost a year ago, and recently it stopped working while I was using it. For the amount of time i've had it, i've only used it a few times. I was extremely disapointed how it broke down so fast as I thought the machine itself was made with quality and in my eyes, it was considered a heavy duty shredder. Boy was i ever wrong. I strongly don't recommend this to anyone.
Strengths: shreds well when it works.
Weakness: Thinks it's jammed at random times.
All in all so far, it's a good enough shredder, especially since we got it on the "free" sale, but it constantly thinks that it's jammed, even though there's nothing in it. I have to shake it around to finally get it to work right again. Then it's fine.
Strengths: shreds unopened mail, credit cards & cds. compact size fits on a desk easily
Weakness: does not last long!
6 month old machine just up and died while attempting to shred the equivalent of two sheets of paper. I love the idea of a nice compact machine I can set on my desk, but I DON'T like the idea of replacing it every six months. This machine was used on a daily basis for approximately 5-6 pieces of mail.
Strengths: Did shred paper and even a checkbook spine. Never tired a CD.
Weakness: Stopped working after less than 3 months and with very little use.
Purchased 2 MailMates as 2006 Christmas gifts. The one we have was only used occasional and worked fine for 2 1/2 months. Then one day went to turn it on and the power would not come on. Machine was DOA. 1st returned the unit to the store where it was purchased as per the instructions in the warranty and they would not take it. Called customer support (India) and instructed to ship it at my cost...
Strengths: -actually shreds unopened junk mail -all shredding is thorough (not partial, like some other shredders) -shreds credit cards completely -diamond shred adds to the security
Weakness: -unit is small, this means it fits in small areas but the bin is smaller as well so it must be emptied more often (though it is very easy to empty with the pull out bin)
I've only had this shredder for a week, but so far I love it. It is far better than my prior home shredder or our shredder at the office. It shreds thoroughly - even thick junk mail with faux credit cards inside. It shows no signs (or smells) of overheating, even after heavy use. It is really easy to empty (unlike other shredders, I don't have to awkwardly lift off the top to empty the bin). So...
Strengths: Shreds unopened junk mail
Weakness: Can be easily filled so full that it is impossible to empty without breaking the bin.
After it got full, it was impossible to empty. The handle broke off in my hands. The cheap plastic just bends rather than opening the bin. I seriously don't know how to empty it without completely breaking the bin door off. This happened on Day One.

It doesn't know when to stop!
Strengths: It shreds paper.
Weakness: Won't stop running.
It seems that I'm doing better than most folks with this thing. Mine works when I turn it on. ALL THE TIME, WHENEVER it's turned on! It's supposed to stop running when the paper has gone through, but it seems to think that there is always paper in the slot. So I have to turn it off to stop the shredding process. The Staples web site ( product-support-staple... ) is useless.
