solid SVHS

Strengths: Good recording quality for VHS, good playback.

Weakness: Regular limitations of VHS, average construction quality

It gets the job done. The flying erase head is decent but not as clean as it should be. The record button on the remote doesn't work for some reason. But aside from that, it's a solid machine for playback of old VHS tapes, and if you really need to record on VHS (or SVHS) it does a nice job.

JVC HR-S5912U

Strengths: automaitc calibration is a big plus, auto setup/clock must have vcr connected to a PBS station for auto programming to work.

Not bad VCR

Strengths: SVHS, remote control

Weakness: Controls on the unit are not easy to use

I purchased this VCR to export video tapes to my computer. It works okay for that. But, you really need to use the remote control to easily navigate the tape.

JVC HR-S5912U

Strengths: Strengths: automaitc calibration is a big plus, super vhs excellent picture playback quality

Weakness: remote, and can't find super vhs tape to buy

almost impossible to find svhs video tapes, plus if you record in super vhs mode, it cannot be played back in conventional vcrs, Plus for this kinda money jvc could have developed a backlit remote
