Strengths: This unit has all the bells and whistles you need in an a/v receiver; plenty of power for the 7 channels of digital sound and multiple input and output plugs for all your other equipment. Great value.
Weakness: The instruction manual looks like it was translated from Japanese; it is difficult to follow at times. The remote is not easy to use or program.
This receiver has awsome power, great sound and is an incredible value for the features included. My only complaint is the instruction manual and the remote. Can't they wite a book that even novices can understand? This complaint is directed at all receiver manufacturers. My last receiver was a Yamaha and its manual was also generally unintelligble. All in all, I highly recommend this receiver...
Strengths: powerful, 7.1 chanels, and plenty of features
Weakness: no powered zone 2 out, no high current amplifier
Sony's STRDE-995 is an incredible receiver. I have owned this unit for about 6 months it's an incredible system, it boast the latest in surround processing, and has plenty of power, but the zone 2 output should have been powered. I read a review that suggest this unit does not work with sony's RM-AV3000, it will! simply change the commmand mode by turning the unit off, then hold enter & turn it...
Strengths: Easy set up. Plenty of power. Everything is well labelled and easy to connect.
Weakness: I had an older dvd player and it did not have the digital connector needed. I spent $80 for a new progressive scan dvd.
I had an earlier version of this receiver (5.1). Looks great, fits well into my system. Very easy to connect. Remote has everyting on it. Sound reprodcution is excellent. The receiver has plenty of power for my 7.1 home theatre set up. The DTS recordings are awesome. I would definitely recommend this receiver. Shop around - I bought it at Best Buy for $499 but later found it for about $100 less...
Strengths: Plenty of power, all the latest decoding options, sounds great.
Weakness: Remote difficult to program, see summary:
I have a couple of problems with this otherwise fine unit. The main problem stems from the fact that my digital cable box (Sci. Atlanta) has only a coaxial digital audio out (no optical). The only coax in on the sony is named "DVD" so I have to use the TV/Sat input for my DVD player, using its optical input. I can change the name displayed on the receiver, but not on the remote, so the input...
Strengths: The 7 channel sound system is nice feature offering the ultimate surround sound experience
Weakness: Not configured for Sony's very own expensive RM-AV3000. Manual is not that great.
I bought this product for it's great price and numerous features. I previously used a Sony STR-DE975 and was anxious to hook up my rear surround speakers. The first thing I noticed when I was assembling it was that there is no longer a digital optical connector for the DVD player. This forced me to go and purchase an coaxial cord in the middle of the night. The receiver also no longer has the...
Strengths: Best sound I have ever owned. 7.1 out of this world.
Weakness: Remote needs fine tuning. if you hit the wrong button, sometimes it is hard to get it back to the right one.
I am not a very technical guy with some of the fancy wording. Easy way to put this unit into "normal" wording. If you have anything (tv, dvd, cable box, pc..etc) that has digital sound (anolog or optical), this system will bring whatever you are watching to a new prespective. Exp. try a Sony Playstation in the Video 3 with just red/white sound. This receiver will make games sound so much better....
The Sony STR-DE995 is an AV receiver retailing for $400 and released in 2006, but is no longer for sale on the official Sony site. It has a 7.1 channel x 100 watts. It has a good portfolio of decoders including Dolby® Digital, Dolby® Digital EX, dts®, dts ES®, dts:Neo6®, and Dolby® Pro Logic® II Decoding. It converts s-video from composite video. Interestingly, this...

Sony STR-DE995/B A/V Receiver
Strengths: This receiver has everything you could want and more for this price range. Plenty of power with good surround sound. On screen display was a great deal of help in setting up system.
Weakness: Multi room source needs an alternate amplifyer to work correctly and was not built in system. Any device connected to optical inputs can't be sent to 2nd room source.
When looking for a receiver, I searched all brands for the most features for the best value. This receiver had everything you could ask for except the second room amplifier should have been built into the receiver. It has great 7.1 sound and incredible power for the 770 watts. I would highly recommend this receiver.
