Description
To move to a level beyond purely functional home theater, the TX-SR674 gives you everything you need for audibly powerful, visually expressive home entertainment. The first consideration should be the essentials - like rock-steady amplifier power and performance through Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) and the cleanest audio signals generated by Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry (VLSC). And with HDTV in mind, the TX-SR674 also offers High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and connectivity with the latest high-definition disc formats. Capping it off with Audyssey 2EQ room acoustics correction technology, the TX-SR674 stands out as one of the more complete A/V receivers in its class.

Strengths: Flexible speaker configuration
Weakness: No digital audio on Zone 2, Flimsy binding posts
For now, the HDMI upscaling and switching ended up being more than I needed, since I am only using one HDMI input port (Oppo 970HD) with one HDMI output to my WD-65732. The rest of the video inputs run directly to the TV and the TV switches the audio on the receiver with IR blasters. I like how you can mix and match audio/video inputs on the receiver. The binding posts seem a bit flimsy; there's...
Strengths: HDMI, 2IN, 1 OUT, 7.1 CHANNELS EASY SET UP GREAT SOUND
Weakness: NONE AT THIS POINT
I spent over 1 month looking at every receiver under 1000.00 I could find. After countless hours looking on various A/V Forums, I finally decided on the ONYKO TX-SR674B. I replaced a Yamaha with this unit and I was pleasantly surprised with my purchase. I bought it @ J& R. Free shipping and it was fast!
Strengths: Sound quality seems to be good. Has all of the outlets needed to connect to HDTV.
Weakness: I think I have everything connected properly, and I still cannot get the auto setup to work. I am getting an echo in the surround sound mode. I plan to contact customer service for help.
Because of the surround echo and being unable to get the auto set-up to work, I am concerned that this product, a. may be damaged from shipping, b. is going to cause me a great deal of anguish before it is set up properly.
Strengths: HDMI, Good Value, Great sound, easy set-up
Weakness: None
I love this machine. Only had it a week but am thrilled with it so far. Using Polk 6800's (five speekes) but plan to get a least one more more. Upconversion works great. This receiver is real winner!!!!
Strengths: 2 HDMI Input, easy to set up, HDMI up converting (Big Plus), reasonable price
Weakness: none noted yet
This is my first receiver so I'm not an expert at all. However I find it very easy to install all my speakers, dvd players and hooked it up to my TV. I only have this receiver for a couple days. I will update once I have it for couple monts
Strengths: Easy to operate for novices. There's a speaker microphone setup included so you have the optimal speaker listening. It calculates all of your speakers for distance and listening.
Weakness: None
Shopped around and found the J&R was the best price with free shipping. Check out quite a few AV forums and they all came to the same concenses. Onkyo TX SR674 was our best bang for our buck.
Strengths: Wonderful sound output. Powerful. Lots of input and output jacks, including HDMI. Helpful, couteous technical support.
Weakness: Quirky initial settings. Technical support telephone number not provided in user manual. Coaxial audio input from DVD player cannot be output to TV via HDMI cable.
We're happy with the performance of our STR-DG1000, but Sony could make the setup process easier. Initial settings for sound are 0dB. Why? We connected our non-HDMI DVD player via component video and coaxial audio cables, but couldn't get DVD sound from our Sony Bravia TV speakers using an HDMI receiver-to-tv cable. Sony didn't include a tech support telephone number in the receiver manual, but...

Onkyo TX-SR674: Exactly . . . No, make that BETTER...
Strengths: (+) Superb sound. Speaker setup WAS automatic. 1/2 usual "rat's nest" wiring assoc. w/ home theaters setup can be eliminated because the video upscaling feature DOES WORK!
Weakness: (-) Set up A/V systms before? OK, no problem here. New to this? Setup is not that tough but DO read the manual until you get a feel for WHY you are making specific assignments.
Looking for a sub-$1,000.00 receiver? You MUST include this unit on your short-list. I have had mine for only a week but have wrung it out very thoroughly and I love it! NOTE: On shelves or in enclosures, Onkyo recommends clearance of 8" on top and sides and 4" at back of unit. (8" on sides seemed a little extreme. Called tech suppt who said 2"-3" on EACH side is good but 8" at top IS important.)...
