Strengths: 2 HDMI in, can upconvert all video signals to HDMI or keep same output, will show volume level on TV for all source signal types except HDMI, easy setup
Weakness: can't re-name input channels, remote apparently can't recognize my DVD player as a CD player
I had been looking at the TX-SR604 for quite some time as an HDMI-switchable receiver to replace my aging Kenwood that was limited on video channels and digital audio capabilities. When the TX-SR605 was released, I decided that the new HD audio capabilities made it worth buying the newer model. I run an HD Tivo unit into a Sony rear-projection LCD bigscreen and I haven't lost any signal quality...
Strengths: hmdi up converting. cost
Weakness: heating. volume scale seems not conventional
this is the first receiver I bought. It works properly with all the functioned I tested. But the volume scale seems strange. I need to increase the volume >50 just for a low volume audio. I first thought my item has defects because I increased the volume to 20 but didn't hear anything. Later I did some research, seems it is normal for this receiver. It is also hot if you used for just half an...
Strengths: 2 HDMI - upconverting, great sound, easy setup
Weakness: limited upscale on all sources, basic remote, upconverts to 720p not 1080p
Purchased to upgrade from my Sony. This, by far, was a great investment. HDMI 1.3 inputs, great quality, amazing sound. Highly recommended for home theater 7.1 surround sound.
Strengths: SR605 has every option you could want for an under $400 receiver. Satellite radio, AM & FM, all the surround options. Most importantly, it has Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD lossless capabilities!
Weakness: Does get hot as a lot of reviews have indicated. Universal remote not the best. More complicated set-up.
Overall, this was an incredible buy for my economical home theater. I purchased teh sr605 mainly because it has the HD sound options, which my PS3 supports with its Blu-Ray player. The video pass-through from HDMI to HDMI looks seamless to me. I have heard the video upconversion is have not noticed it or even used any components where I would. I picked this receiver over the Samsung AS720HTiB,...
Strengths: Not so different from earlier 600 series ones, except HDMI
Weakness: just 2 HDMI in, and 2 optical in. Remote is back to basic, without the macros.
Its ok for this price. But 705 has much better features. I dont like the remote. They wantedly cut down the features of remote. The 603x I had before, had more better remote, which they are only offering with 705. This doesnt have fans to cool down the box. No THX.
Strengths: small footprint, nice looking, enough power, eq2 calibration, enough inputs and outputs, future proof, slick design, really nice overall, lossless sound (hd audio) decoding
Weakness: video up-conversion to 720p only, no multiEQ, no cooling fans
nice receiver, i paired it with an Infinity tss-1200 speaker package, and it just sounds really phenomenal. i live in an apartment, and did not do the audyssey equalization, but just hooking it up it sounds good. it is well built, it does get warm but nothing like anything else. i wish it had some cooling fans, but it is no complaint. i used the stock wires that came with the speakers, but i...
Strengths: * 2 HDMI in / 1 HDMI out (HDMI repeater i.e. passes both audio and video using single cable) * Decodes nearly all latest audio formats. * Audessey automatic speaker setup
Weakness: * upconverts only to 720p
The main reason I purchased this receiver was to future proof my home theater. It has the latest version of HDMI spec (1.3) and does pass both audio and video via a single HDMI cable. The price ($340 shipped) I paid at amazon made this receiver even more appealing with all the new features that it provides. This purchase was therefore a no-brainer. For HDMI to HDMI connections, it does not change...
Strengths: HDMI switching w/ upconverting; automatic speaker calibration; price for features.
Weakness: None
I bought this receiver to allow HDMI inputs. Overall I think it's the best receiver at this price point for 2 HDMI inputs, full audio and video pass-through, and upconverting of other signals through the HDMI output. The automatic speaker calibration with the included microphone is also an outstanding feature. Very easy to use. Overall, an outstanding receiver!
Strengths: great sound, autoconfigures with included setup mic
Weakness: Does not do HDMI to component conversion
This is a rather good receiver and is easy to configure with many inputs and outputs. It receives audio over HDMI and has tons of options. My only disappointment was that it doesn't transmit video from the HDMI input to Component output. I have a projection HDTV from a couple of years ago which doesn't have HDMI but my Satellite Box does. So I figured I'd feed the receive the HDMI output from my...
THE GOOD: Two HDMI 1.3 inputs; converts analog video sources to HDMI; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; XM- and Sirius- ready; automatic speaker calibration; switches as many as five high-definition video sources. THE BAD: Downconverts 1080i component video signals to 720p when outputting over HDMI; HDMI video quality converted from analog sources may not satisfy videophiles;...

Note: This receiver will be superceded by the Onkyo TX-SR606 scheduled to come out in the Summer of 2008. The Onkyo TX-SR605 is a 7.1 channel receiver supporting HDMI 1.3a (2 inputs/1 output) for a very affordable MSRP of $499. It also includes 3 component, and 5 S-Video/composite that are transcoded and output to the HDMI output, simplifying your setup with all video and audio signals coming out...

Best Bang for the Buck!
Strengths: Great look. Powerful sound. 1080p switching. HDMI up-converting from Component, S-Video, & RCA. Room EQ & Volume adjustments.
Weakness: Only 2 HDMI inputs. HDMI signal converting doesn't upscale sources.
For the money this has to be the best receiver out there if you want to be able to hook up any source via S-Video, RCA, Component, or HDMI and run a single cable to your TV via HDMI. The sound and quality are on par with Onkyo and my previous Harman Kardon. I wish it had a third or fourth HDMI input, but for the price I can't complain. The Room EQ & Volume adjustment from the included microphone...
