Good receiver at a good price

Strengths: Clean low distortion amp, easy to use controls, supports many modern audio formats

Weakness: quirky HDMI output

I'll start by saying that overall I am very pleased with this receiver and I would recommend it to anyone looking for an full featured budget priced receiver. I am NOT an audiophile. I'm just a guy who enjoys watching movies in surround sound. As such I try to buy components that offer the features I need without all the extra stuff I don't need at a low price. This receiver fits that description...

Perfect low-cost surround sound!

Strengths: Clean sound, lots of features, inexpensive, easy setup, adequate power, great for music

Weakness: None

Bought this item to replace an ailing NAD T640 5.1 Home Theater Receiver which I dearly loved (when it worked). It was clean and powerful which I need to power my floor-standing Polk speakers. But, I should have made the switch sooner!! I was looking for a replacement that would give me the most bang for my buck and after weeks of research narrowed it down to the Onkyo TX-SR505. WOW, what a...

nice receiver for my 5.1 speaker system

Strengths: many inputs, including optical and coaxial; HDMI ports, powerful, easy to use.

Weakness: no sound through HDMI

This is a good receiver for my 5.1 speaker system. The digital input through either coaxial or optical works well. The output power is great. Also the video connections save me some adaptors. Only thing is no sound through the HDMI. I like this receiver and will recommend my friend to have it. Thanks.

Best Unit In It's Class

Strengths: low distortion, easy setup, Hdmi v.1.3 switcher, two year warranty, nice custom decoders

Weakness: Remote will not work with my Samsung 1400 blu ray player.

I really don't think that there is a better receiver in this price range than this one. The watts per channel is perfectly loud AND clear. It also seemed to me that most of the other receivers in this price range had a few more watts per channel (wpc) and ALOT more THD (Total harmonic distortion) who wants loud distorted sound? the .08 THD on this unit is noticeably clearer sounding than my last...

Good price-quality ratio

Strengths: easy to setup, many IOs, nice price

Weakness: it's a bit hot

This one is my first home theater system. So far it is a 5.1 connected with PS3 and HDTV. I just only used the audio functionality but it's been already amazing. It provides a lot of digital IO, like optical, coaxial, and HDMI. many people complained the poor HDMI pass-through but I do not really use it. The price is very reasonable. I am pretty sure it is the best price-quality ratio for this...

TX-SR505

Strengths: HDMI 1.3 connection, 7.1 Channel, Good build, powerful and excellent performance for the price

Weakness: Does not pass audio thru HDMI so does not support TrueHD. Gets really hot so needs good ventilation

I got this last Christmas for my bedroom Home theater setup. I am very happy with the performance especially at the price I paid. However, when I got the bluray DVD player, I wish this unit can pass thru the True HD audio via HDMI. Now, I might have to replace it when a new model comes along.
