Strengths: HDMI connections Sound Cost Easy hookup
Weakness: None at this point
This receiver sounds great, has four HDMIs and low difficulty setting-up. I compared this receiver to the Onkyo 805. The 805 scared me a bit with video processing. For a little more money, I decided on the Denon.
Strengths: Inputs, inputs, inputs. If you have it, you can hook it up to this monster of an a/v receiver.
Weakness: main remote is plain ugly and useless. Use the second remote if you have to. Sometimes confusing menu that you have to navigate to change options. And there are MANY options to be changed.
After using a Philips receiver for 7 years plus, I was looking to upgrade and get something better. I have been enjoying Digital sound with the Philips for this whole time, but was looking to something better than DTS 5.1, which was the best that the Philips outputted. At first, I was hesitant to allow my credit card to make such as purchase, but wow. Glad I did. I have everything hooked up thru...
Strengths: 2 remotes 1 for dummies 1 fancy one for those who can use it
Weakness: Too hard to read the screen from 12' but using tv as a computer screen helps here ( I think a lot of rec have this problem)
I was able to do just about everything without even opening the owners manual. Even though this takes a little longer, it helps me to actually learn what every thing does and then remember this. The fancy remote can change video and audio signals (once hooked up correctly) by first making sure you are controlling the amp at top of remote and then pushing one of the choices located towards the...
Strengths: Lots of inputs, can handle plenty of speakers and has power to spare.
Weakness: GODAWFUL main remote that all but forces you to use the TV for basic operations, or use the alternate remote.
The base unit is very solid, working in our living room; we've got a big'un, and so it needs some horsepower to fill the room with sound. It does that just fine, with great clarity and definition. That said ... the main remote is simply the most unintuitive, four-letter-word inducing annoyance I have yet to encounter in my adult life of dealing with consumer electronics. There's simply no obvious...
Strengths: Quality, quality, quality. Wide support for input signals and formats. Sounds GREAT.
Weakness: EL display, horrendous GUI menu and remote.
I purchased Denon AVR-3808CI receiver because I needed something that is capable of decoding all the modern digital signals and do HDMI switching for my projector. I owned a 12-year old Denon receiver, and it was time to upgrade. Basically, I got what I wanted. However, there are some gotchas people need to know about. 1. Display. EL display technology reminds me of '70th. Information on it is...
Strengths: Power, flexibility, sound quality, 7.1, HDMI inputs and output.
Weakness: Fat fingers will have a hard time hooking up speaker cables
I did a tremendous amount of research. I had a Denon AVR several years ago that was killed in a lightning storm and just did without any AVR for several years. The bug bit me again once I got my new plasma TV. This is the AVR to buy unless you can afford separates (high end). There's nothing this AVR can't do. It's definitely a 5* AVR.
Strengths: Solid build, very powerful for any application, future proof
Weakness: remote control, not very intuitive to use
This receiver has everything you would want in terms of power, inputs & outputs & even a great look. Unfortunately, the DVD output has gone into a funk, working for about 30 minutes, then the audio goes silent until I switch outputs to something else & switch it back. I will have to service the unit which has become a real hassle due to disconnecting it, getting it to the reapir shop & reconnect,...
THE GOOD: Feature-packed AV receiver; visually appealing graphical user interface; four HDMI 1.3 inputs; can upconvert all analog signals to HDMI and upscale HDMI signals to 1080p; excellent standard-definition video upconversion; onboard Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio decoding; XM-ready; automatic speaker calibration; Ethernet port enables digital music streaming, firmware updates, and...

Denon 3808
Strengths: Lots of power.
Weakness: Remote.
The Denon 3808 has tons of power for most people's needs. It has lots of inputs including several HDMI inputs. This receiver barely gets five stars because of the main remote. I have never encountered a worse remote. Do yourself a favor and purchase a separate all-in-one universal remote.
