Additional Specifications
Frequency Band: Lightweight, open-air design Automatic on/off for transmitter & headphone Battery life: Up to 45-hour Vibration function for exciting game & movie experiences
Strengths: Avoids electrical interference that plagued a similar radio-frequency product from Sony.
Weakness: 1. Must remain in line-of-sight with transmitter, whereas radio-frequency product does not require this. 2. Very difficult to place the headphones in the charger properly on the first try.
This product does what it's supposed to do ... provides a decent-quality, cordless headset that is not subject to interference from nearby electrical devices. A radio-frequency product allows you to (e.g.) walk out of the room where the TV and transmitter are, and still hear the broadcast. But this infrared product requires line-of-site to function. Both this device and Sony's equivalent...
Strengths: comfortable earpad, reception is good enough, can also use conventional battery.
Weakness: minor hissing
I wanted a IR wireless because I live in an apartment and I don't want to take a chance with RF wireless. The reception works well enough, only when the headphone and transmiter are completely blocked will the sound cut out. However even after I increased the TV volume while decreased the headphone's, there is still minor hissing in the background. Same result on my PC. The surround effect sound...
Strengths: Great sound and it really does what it's supposed to. It fits perfectly for any sized head (among my family so far) and the manual is very simple and easy to follow. I like the vibration feature too!
Weakness: The hissing noises if you're not right in front of the actual transmitter. It's more noticeable when there's no sound, but when sound comes on, it goes away.
I really like these headphones. It does what it says and when close, the sound is very clear. I don't like the hissing noises that can occur when there's dead silence, but that doesn't bother me that much. Also, the charging unit feels kind of cheap and the headphones don't always stay on. It has a vibrating feature that rumbles to the bass but it's not necessary. The SRS feature actually makes...
Strengths: Great realistic sound with a vibration switch. Comfortable headset with auto on/off. Rechargable battery with long life. Reasonable price for the quality.
Weakness: A bit bulky if using while lying down in bed as I do. With the infrared technology they must be within about 30 feet and in clear sight of the transmitter.
These cordless infrared headphones are overall a great value. I paid $70 at ABT Electronics on-line. I use them to watch TV at night without disturbing the wife and they sound great...and are a pleasure to use. Just a little tricky to place them on the charging cradle.
Strengths: Easy to install, Headset is comfortable
Weakness: Headset is difficult to get positioned on charger, Rechargable batteries only available through Sony
I am pleased with the performance of the MDR-IF540RK cordless headphone system. Now my wife and I both can comfortably watch TV shows and watch DVDs. Previously, due to my hearing loss, I had to have the sound up high enough to hear but it was too loud for my wife. Now I can adjust the level to my needs without being a discomfort to her.
The Sony MDR-IF540K is a high-end wireless headphone set that is designed to provide a comfortable form of mobility for users who dont like to be limited to the length of a connected wire. With the headphones comes a high-power infrared wireless transmitter, headphones, a rechargable battery with up to 45 hours of battery life, a connecting cable, and a UniMatch plug adapter and AC power adapter....

good product, but a bit heavy
Strengths: no hiss or drop-out out to 90 degrees, very good sound, automatic on/off with use
Weakness: somewhat heavy headphones are midsize, and headband pulls earcups up against earlobes
My mother is in a small room at a nursing home, so she readily stays within the line-of-sight and distance limits. She is blind however and has some trouble putting the headphones on their charging stand and then moving them back & forth until they mate with the charging contacts. An investigation of the market reveals that there are very few quality IR headphones out there; these are at a...
