Maximum DVD Recording Time: 8 Hour
Strengths: DVD Recorder with 1080 i and p upgrade. Ease of use.
Weakness: none so far
This is the best DVD player/recorder with 1080i/p upgrade. I was able to purchase this for $99. Other brands that are less reliable are selling with the same features for around $150. Be sure to get an HDMI cable if you want to see the higher resolution playback. Everything seems great.
Strengths: Picture looks good with upconversion, plays CD, VCD, AVI, JPEG formats in addition to DVD
Weakness: Slow disc load, does not play mpg files, remote control is not universal
In my opinion, this is the best value for a name-brand dvd recorder. Other dvd recorders with similar features usually cost more than this one. It works just like a VCR except that it plays and records with DVD+-R and DVD+-W instead of VHS tapes. Another difference is that this unit doesn't come with a tv tuner like a VCR. In order to record TV shows, one must connect it to the output from the TV...
Strengths: Easy to use, no surprises. Able to upconvert to other formats.
Weakness: Slow when loading up a DVD disc when you turn the machine on.
I bought this unit for a friend who is not too much familiar with eletronics. She wanted to transfer some of her DV tapes into DVDs, so I did some research and this unit seems to be good for what she wanted to do. It didn't take too much explaining and it was easy to use and it did exactly what she wanted to accomplished. For what I paid for, I would call this a winner.
Strengths: Good price for a DVD recorder (purchased at Circuit City), video upconversion is a definite plus, lots of features, very detailed remote.
Weakness: None So Far
Having hooked the unit up to my High Definition satellite receiver and recorded a couple of test DVDs, I can appreciate the choices the unit offers, such as the amount of video on one DVD (1 hour up to 6 hours depending on video quality)and the quality of the upconverted video that makes good use of the HDMI input on my television. The feed through video feature (allowing the viewing of the TV...
Strengths: Good quality picture, easy to use.
Weakness: Setup was a nightmare! No tuner. Some previous recorded DVDs would not play back.
I really like this recorder. Once the system was set up recording was easy with great quality. I found it simple to transfer old VHS tapes onto DVDs and also recorded directly onto DVDs from my DVR system. A couple of drawbacks: There is no tuner in the recorder so you have to have the TV on the channel you are recording. (You can turn the TV off while recording). Also in other reviews I've read...
Strengths: Price, DTS, Dolby Digital, HDMI
Weakness: Remote does not light up
I purchased this DVD Recorder mainly because of all its features and the price of the unit. I am able to hook up my vcr to it and record all of home movies to DVD. I have DirecTV HD and I like to record my favorite tv shows and movies, then record them onto DVD. This unit has the ability to upconvert my regular DVD's to 1080p with the use of a HDMI cable (not included). It also has DTS and Dolby...
Strengths: 1. DVD Recorder is easy to use and setup. 2. Great value for the money. 3. 1080P upconversion capability.
Weakness: 1. Startup time is a little slow but not excessive. 2. Can only record one channel at a time.
This unit basically operates like the older VCR's but in higher quality. I'm using it just to record satellite tv programs onto a no-name 4X DVD-RW disc. I can only record one channel at a time. If you want to record two channels at once, you'll need to buy a much more expensive dvd recorder or a dvr service. This unit does have the 1080P upconversion, however, I'm not using this recorder with a...
Strengths: Easy to use...top quality!
Weakness: No tuner.
Setup was very easy. I especially liked the HDMI hookups for my new HD LCD TV and receiver. Quality of the DVD playback, even on my own DVD+R disks, is really outstanding. Toshiba has another winner here!
Strengths: -Upconverts Component to 1080P -Upconverts Analog to Component -Easy to Use Interface -Records on Multiple Formats -Plays all Media Beautifully -Great Looking Model
Weakness: -No Tuner In Unit (Can Only Record One Channel without User Channel Change) -Start-Up Time Could Be Faster
If you are in the market for a DVD recorder in 2007 then this is the choice for you. The downside to this model is that there is no tuner in the unit. This makes it so that while recording, the unit is unable to change the channel itself. So if you are not present, you can only record one channel. There are only a couple units on the market that have digital tuners built in, and I have not read a...

Long finalizing times
Strengths: up conversiongood selection of bitrates
Weakness: slow finalizing of -r media
to record in 16:9 you must use -r discs which will take forever to finalize (many minutes at least)because according to Toshiba, the unit must write something to the unused portion of the disc. r discs finalize quickly but will only record 4:3 aspect
