Strengths: Supports all formats, Dual format
Weakness: dont support 220Volt
I tried everything i had handy at it- vcds work, svcd is supported, .mpg's work fine, divx's (AND XVID, YES.) work great. I tried a cd with both avi's and .mpg's.. absolutely pristine. i think this thing even supports .wmv's, i saw a windows icon next to a file on an old cd , Over all the quality is good
Strengths: Fine picture quality, plays "almost" any format, firmware upgradable, region-code breakable. Can't expect more from a $70 player.
Weakness: wmv format is not supported, slow picture search (up to 8x), not-so-easy remote controller.
It seems to play most formats as advertised; I tested dvd+r, mp3 cd, and divx. It would be perfect for me if it could also play wmv, but it wouldn't matter if you could spare some time in conversion. Remote control buttons are not so easy, but not a big deal. Another problem I noticed is that the player did not respond very well to the remote unless I aimed it in a very straight direction.
Strengths: Can play almost anything.... even my already broken, scratched DVDs, VCDs. And not expensive.
Weakness: Very lousy warranty service
I broke my previous DVD player (well, I didn't break it, but my 2-year-old son did, together with many VCDs and DVDs) and need to buy a new one. After shopping around, finally chose this as I heard quite a lot good feedback. I like the look of it, very simple and no fancy thing. And what surprised me pleasantly is that it can play almost anything I put inside, even the DVD's and VCD's that had...
Strengths: Plays everything. Will play/repeat 6-7 movies in DIVX format on 1 DVD.
Weakness: Pixalation/Pausing during data stream error on DIVX files.
I have 150 DIVX movies that I can only watch on the computer. I simply copied the DIVX files to DVD's (5-7 per disk) then I can watch them on my HDTV at near DVD quality. If you use smaller movie files, you can put them into different folders, then repeat one file (movie), all files, or the files in a specific folder. This makes creating custom movie archive files simple. You create a folder for...
Strengths: Upgradable firmware, subtitle, eat almost all kinds of disk. Support divx.
Weakness: Doesn't support long file names.
This is a great divx DVD player. It can play almost all my divx/xvid movies. After upgraded the firmware, it can display subtitles now. You can find a way to get it region-free on the internet, too. Highly recommend to who wants a cheap divx DVD player.
Strengths: Plays almost everything: DVD, CD, JPEG, MPEG4, DivX, MP3, VCD, SVCD, DVD+-R, CD-R/RW
Weakness: Remote is not that good. Does not play *.wmv.
I purchased this DVD player from Target and I love it. For the price less than $70 it performs very well. It has some issues with playing DivX with HI bitrate or VBR MP3 sound, but overall I am extremely happy with it so far. I have read that this dvd player can play any regional dvd from anywhere in the world(after a simple adjustment) and doesn't have macrovision meaning you can record onto vhs...
Strengths: Format support (DVDR, CDR, DIVX, MPEGs, JPEGs), Price, looks, size.
Weakness: No DTS support, but most dvds don't have DTS anyway.
This player is great. For $70 you get a quality DVD player that supports Divx and Mpegs, has optical out, and operates with ease. This unit operates flawless. From VCDs to SVCDs to Jpegs to Mpegs to tons of DVD+Rs, I have had absolutly no problems. Not even a temporary glitch. Starts up Disc very quickly. It performs so smooth, like a machete through butter. My only neg comment would be that I...
Strengths: It can play Divx movie. The price is very affordable.
Weakness: No DTS decoding, just pass through the signal to amplifier. If you have an amplifier which can decode the DTS signal, you don't have this problem. Sometimes, Video and Audio is not syncronized.
It is very nice little DVD player which can play DIVX movie also. I think that it is hard to find this kind of dvd player in $70 range. I hope that Philips upgrade the firmware more often.
Strengths: Divx Support 3x, 4x and 5x Upgradable Firmware-divx external subtitle support Region Free, search online Progressive Scan Sleek looking some online retailers selling it forless than $70
Weakness: Remote control - clumsy no DTS decoding. MENU is weak doesn't support long file names
This player has played everything i have thrown at it, including DIVX, XVID, DVDS, VCDS, SVCDS - I haven't tested it with the bit rate etc. It doesn't decode DTS. You can download a firmware from the manufacturers website which will add new features including the support for external subtitles. I haven't tried DVD-RW or DVD-R so can't comment on that. But I researched this unit before I purchased...

Philips DVP642 DVD Player
Strengths: This region free DVD player/after little change in setting/ is simply the best so far. It plays MPEG-4,2,1/DivX/XviD/XSVCD/SVCD/VCD,DVD+R,RW,DVD-R,RW,MP3,JPGs,AVI
Weakness: Remote control could have a better layout. But it is OK. Only 8x FWD
I think this is good product for $70. You got to remember that for 70$ you are not going to get mercedes. There are better products on the market but much more expensive and not so flexible. For all that I think this is great value. Design is ok but the main reason I bought this one is that I can play anything I want to. Till today it has played every disk I put in. Philips is saying they do not...
